Swim Levels

Swim levels are provided as a guide for parents/guardians to reference upon registration. Our swim levels are designed with safety and positive progression in mind. If your child is registered for the wrong class, they will be moved to the appropriate level, which will result in a change of class time. *Reminder swimming ability varies differently for each individual. Every swimmer learns at a different pace.

    •  6 months - 2 years

This class offers a gentle, playful introduction to the water for our youngest swimmers!

In this parent-and-child class, babies and toddlers explore the water through games and movement, all while feeling safe and supported by a parent or guardian.

Focus is on safety, water comfort, blowing bubbles, basic water movement, floating with support, and submersion readiness.

A parent/guardian does get into the water to participate with the child.

    • 3 years - 4 years

At 5 years of age we recommend Level 1

25min class | Location: Pool Swim Square

This class is perfect for young swimmers who are ready to build skills with the help of a parent or guardian in the water.

Through fun and guided instruction, children learn supported front and back floats, basic arm and leg movements, breath control, and water safety.

Ideal for kids gaining confidence before swimming independently or group lessons.

A parent/guardian does get into the water to participate with the child.

    • Classes are based on skill level, not age. We do evaluate each participant on the first day of class.

25min class | Location: Pool Swim Square

    Swim Starter/Beginner.

This class is perfect for swimmers with little to no prior experience who are ready to participate independently without a parent or guardian in the water.

Swimmers will learn to feel comfortable in the pool while developing foundational skills such as blowing bubbles, putting their face in the water, front and back floating with support, and basic arm and leg movements.

Safety skills like entering and exiting the pool independently.

The goal is to build confidence, body position, and readiness for more advanced swimming skills.

If you are unsure as to what level to place your swimmer in, please email Ashlyn.smith@islandreccenter.org

    • Classes are based on skill level, not age. We do evaluate each participant on the first day of class.

25min class | Location: Pool Swim Square

    Advanced Beginner/Intermediate.

This class is for swimmers who have completed level 1 successfully, or are comfortable in the water and can do basic skills such as floating and submerging.

Swimmers will work on swimming short distances independently using front crawl and backstroke. They’ll also be introduced to new skills and building comfortability in the water.

The focus is on refining technique, increasing stamina, and preparing for more advanced strokes and water safety skills.

If you are unsure as to what level to place your swimmer in, please email Ashlyn.smith@islandreccenter.org

    • Classes are based on skill level, not age. We do evaluate each participant on the first day of class.

25min class | Location: Pool Swim Square

    Advanced Intermediate/Stroke Development.

This class is for swimmers who have successfully completed level 2, or can independently swim front crawl and backstroke.

The focus of this class is placed on refining freestyle, backstroke, and introducing breaststroke and butterfly.

The goal is for swimmers to improve stroke efficiency. This is the last and final level of youth swim lessons. Learning proper technique at this level is important.

Participants move to Swim Club once mastering all 4 strokes.

If you are unsure as to what level to place your swimmer in, please email Ashlyn.smith@islandreccenter.org

    • Ages: 6 years - 16 years

Swim Club is a great fit for swimmers who have completed levels 1,2,3 lessons and want to stay active in the water without the commitment of a year-round swim team.

Swim Club is designed for swimmers who are ready to build endurance, refine technique, and experience a team-style practice environment.

Participants will work on all four strokes, diving, and flip-turns.

Policies and Procedures

  • During the first lesson, instructors will assess each swimmer to confirm proper placement. If a level change is needed, you’ll be notified by email and class times may adjust.

Progress varies for every swimmer. Repeating a level is common and helps ensure safety, confidence, and skill development.

    • A parent/guardian must remain on deck for swimmers under 16.

    • For Water Babies & Preschool Swim a parent/guardian must be participating in the water with the child.

    • Camp/After School counselors are responsible for swimmer drop-off and pick-up.

    • Restrooms are available on the pool deck.

    • Swimmers may not enter the pool before class begins.

    • Please observe from the designated area and avoid coaching during lessons.

    • Swimsuit

    • Towel (not provided)

    • Goggles (no nose piece) / Not for Water Babies or Preschool Swim

  • As lessons are outdoors, classes may be canceled when:

    • The temperature is below 65°F at class time (per WeatherBug)

    • Wind chill or conditions are unsafe

You will be notified by email as soon as possible.

  • Makeup classes are not offered.

Because swim lessons take place outdoors, classes may occasionally be canceled due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Instead of makeup classes, swimmers may receive one class credit per session if more than half of the scheduled classes in that session are canceled.

    • If more than half of the classes in a session are canceled, one class credit will automatically be issued.
    • Regardless of how many classes are canceled, only one class credit may be applied per session.
    • The class credit will be issued to the account and registration information used when you enrolled.
    • If a class credit is issued, you will receive an email confirmation and receipt.
    • If a class is already in progress and must end early due to weather or another circumstance, that class does not count as canceled and is not eligible toward a class credit.

  • Missed classes (for any reason) are not eligible for makeup lessons.

  • No refunds will be issued.

  • Classes fill quickly and are first-come, first-served. Spots cannot be held. We recommend registering within 48 hours of opening.

Private Swim Lessons

We are not offering private swim lessons at this time. All swim programming—including group lessons and adult private lessons—must be registered, paid, and documented through the HHI Rec. Center.

Individual coaching or instruction conducted on deck, whether through the exchange of money, goods, or favors, is not allowed.
